Is there a gadget which will measure the thickness of painted steel
sheet from one side? I am thinking of buying a steel boat.

Thanks

There are. How much do you want to spend?

It's been decades, but I remember we had some sort of I think it
was ultrasonic gizmo, with a sensor head at one end you placed on the
part, and it measured the thickness.

Peter,

If you're still in Trowbridge or nearby many of the local boatyards
should have an ultrasonic thickness tester as IIRC it's a requirement
the hull is checked every few years to make sure the hull thickness is
maintained.

David,

Yes I am still in Trowbridge, unfortunately the boats I want to look at
aren't. :)

Having now looked at some, they all seem to have single digital outputs,
which is disappointing - a simple graphical display of reflections vs
time would be much more useful.

Not that I am aware of, but a big F type long reach caliper might be
able to reach around a gunnel.

https://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/measuring-marking/calipers-micrometer/calipers/6-in-long-reach-digital-caliper-63714.html

I have a cheap digital one that I use once in a great while, and in fact
the last thing I used it for was measuring the thickness of a boat hull.
That one had a small round gunnel and I was able to use the caliper by
itself, but if it had a wide gunnel I might use a 123 block or a 246
block to help with the reach.

However, be aware that there may be reasons for the bottom of the hull
and the sides of the hull to be different thickness. For instance a jet
built for running a rocky river "might" have a much thicker hull on the
bottom.

I don't have a caliper that can reach around and measure the bottom.

Another method, if its a commercially made boat, might be to look up its
specs online or call/email the manufacturer and ask them. A couple
years ago I picked up a Tracker to add to my stable of sea horses, and I
found its specs saved on iBoats of all places.
