Hello all

Ideas for smallish oil-can which can be in a toolbox?
- mustn't leak all over
- smallish and light
- can deliver a few drips of oil down air-tool inlet
Thinking of those "popper" oil-cans - small disks. But how to seal
stem / spout?

Ideas?

Try searching for dropper bottle or precision tip bottle. Maybe that
would work for you...

Plastic bottle with needle tip cap. Good place in tool box to store it
where it will not get squished. Small so if it still gets squished the
mess is not huge. Most have gasket in cap, and cap on needle.

I have an oil can that I use on the lathe and the mill. Made of a tuna
can with the lid soldered back on. It has a hole drilled in the center
big enough to allow a small hobby brush to reach the bottom of the can.
Soldered into the hole is a small piece of copper tube long enough to
penetrate to about half way into the can. The tube protrudes about a
half inch above the surface of the lid. If the can is filled only to
about 3/8 of total depth, it will not leak all over if upended. The
brush would be able to dispense a drop or two into an air tool.
YMMV

I have both "eye drop" bottles and ink bottles from printer cartridege
refill kits (yard sale) with needle tops.

Eye drop style bottles with screw caps should be a good answer. They may
last longer in a tool box if in a metal tube. Camping stores have small
refillable condiment containers that might work if rugged enough to not
break. Another possibility is military rifle oil bottles.

Another way to join tin cans is to hammer the end of one slightly larger to
become a press fit over the other, then solder the joint. This gives two
intact solid ends which can be drilled for tubing as mentioned, or brass
fittings such as a screw cap or valve. If a lathe is available the fitting
can be converted to a tubular rivet for more strength.

In a toolbox...

I have never needed to carry an oil can in my tool box, but I think I
still favor the small plastic squeeze bottle with a metal needle
dripper/applicator. It occurred to me that it might be useful to create
a space int he tool box to protect it. If using a sheet metal box fold
a small sheet metal compartment just the right size, and rivet it to the
inside of the box. If using a canvas tool"box" sew in a compartment for
it, and drop a hard plastic cup in the compartment. The idea is that
unless you completely dump the box upside down the oil applicator bottle
is protected from being crushed by other tools in the container.

I would make the compartment or cup deep enough to fully enclose the needle,
they are easy to damage and a puncture hazard to your hand. Sewing machine
needle oilers are cheap and readily available, though their capacity is
small.
