Discussion:
Mill Taper "40": ISO-40 vs. CAT-40 vs. CT-40 vs. BT-40 ???

I've got a two-part question for the group, if I may:

One of the common tapers for millers is frequently identified by only
an integer: "20", "40", "50", and "60" are progressively larger sizes
of this taper. I'm buying a Fritz-Werner FV-2 that uses a 40. I want
to buy some tooling for it, and I'm confused by the variety of tool
holders available for sale. Here's a list of what I've seen so far:

ISO-40
CAT-40
CT-40
BT-40

Would someone be kind enough to explain the difference to me?

The second part of my question is: has anyone seen a 40 taper adapter
that adapts down to an R-8? I'm not sure how such an adapter would
work, since both the 40 and the R-8 have threads at the top, but
someone out there probably has a clever device!

Thanks very much for the help

In the US the drawbar tread size 5/8-11 NC for ISO 40 and CAT 40. The
drawbar thread for R8 is 7/16-20 NF. The adaptor requires a 7/16-20 drawbar
pulling through the ISO 40 taper, clamping both in place. If your machine is
not CNC, the taper would be ISO not CAT.
